Frequently Asked Questions

What is Club Fugazi?

The home of the iconic Steve Silver’s Beach Blanket Babylon for most of its 45-year run, Club Fugazi has a long and storied history as the site of important breakthroughs in local, national, and international culture. Originally built as a gift to the Italian community of North Beach, it was a home to visiting artists, orators, politicians, and other cultural innovators from the time it opened in 1914. In the 1950’s and 60’s the Club hosted poetry readings by the legendary Beat poets, including Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Allen Ginsberg. Thelonius Monk recorded “Alone in San Francisco” at the Club in 1959. Jon Hendricks and Wes Montgomery also recorded here. In 1967, Warner Brothers hosted the first album release party for a new band on their label: the Grateful Dead. When Beach Blanket Babylon arrived in 1975, nobody could have foreseen it would become the longest-running musical revue in history, playing to over 6.5 million guests. Much like the city of San Francisco itself, Club Fugazi has always been a place to connect with the “next.” The 7 Fingers, one of the world’s leading contemporary circus arts companies, has created the current show taking up residence in this storied hall. Late-night, and off-night programming will feature spoken word, live music, and comedy, extending each of those celebrated legacies in the Club Fugazi story.

Today, the Club Fugazi experience is one that marries the excitement of live performance with the feel of a nightclub. Curated to match the world-class caliber of the performances, Club Fugazi features a menu of chiccetti (small bites and plates) sourced from local purveyors, and a wine and beer selection designed to complement the Club’s Italian roots. Guests are seated at community counters, on comfortable chairs that swivel to take in the full room as the performance swirls around them.

What is Dear San Francisco?

Dear San Francisco is an immersive resident production from The 7 Fingers, one of the world’s leading contemporary circus arts companies. Created by Bay Area natives and The 7 Fingers co-founders Shana Carroll and Gypsy Snider, Dear San Francisco will pay homage to the stunning beauty, storied characters, and astounding resilience of the City by the Bay.

Dear San Francisco is the result of a lifelong love affair with the city that continues to reinvent, redefine, and inspire awe,” said Snyder and Carroll in a joint statement. “A theatrical love letter of sorts, our hope is that this production will create a shining and welcoming light for all in the San Francisco Bay Area.”

Powered by exhilarating acrobatics, choreography, spoken word, video projections, shadow play, and original music, Dear San Francisco invites locals and visitors alike on a heart-stopping romp through both the essence and the myth that has San Francisco indelibly etched on our collective imagination. From the Gold Rush and 1906 earthquake to the beat poetry and the mysterious fog, San Francisco comes vividly to life through a series of tableaus (acts)—including hoop diving, Chinese pole, Korean plank, hand-balancing, juggling, and “hand-to-trap” (a form first created by Shana Carroll)—performed by an international cast of world-class acrobats.

Is this show suitable for children?

While Club Fugazi is an all-ages venue, and Dear San Francisco is content-appropriate for all ages - 5 to 105, there are a few considerations as you make your plans:

  • Every person must have a ticket for, and sit in, their own seat.
The show is recommended for ages 5 and up. We are sorry, but infants and toddlers are not permitted to sit on laps in this environment. No babes in arms.

  • When you are selecting seats, please pay close attention to the height of the chair.  Certain heights may be more challenging for children. See chair image with heights below: CLUB FUGAZI SEATING OPTIONS.

  • Dear San Francisco is not actually a children's show.
Though the show takes the form of a contemporary circus, it is not aimed at children in the way circus sometimes is. You know your children best, but our sense is that toddlers may struggle to stay with it. With any luck we'll still be here when they are old enough to take it all in and remember it forever.

We do offer matinee performances most weekends and select holidays. These performances offer an ideal time to share Dear San Francisco with children.

Interested in getting tickets on a budget?  Club Fugazi now offers rush tickets for most performances of Dear San Francisco!  The quantity of these tickets is limited, and only available for in-person purchase 2 hours before the performance, so please plan accordingly.  Up to 2 rush tickets may be purchased per person and seating will be designated by the box office at the time of purchase, meaning there’s no guarantee that multiple guests will be seated together (though we’ll always do our best to accommodate!) and, since they’re based on availability, may be to the rear of the theater or below the mezzanine overhangs.

Rush tickets are sometimes offered for other titles at Club Fugazi. Reach out to our box office to ask about availability.

How do I choose the best seats for my party and me?

Club Fugazi is not a traditional theatre with a proscenium stage and rows of chairs. The show is staged as an experience that uses the entire club to engage the audience regardless of where you are seated (including both on-stage seating and the private Tiara Suite and Lounge). Our seating plan says it all.

Whether you are sitting in 20”, 26” or 32” height chair – all our orchestra, on-stage, and mezzanine seating is comfortable and allows you to swivel side-to-side to visit with friends and performers as they move around among the audience and venue. Every seat also has an adjacent bar that will enable you and your party to enjoy Club Fugazi’s curated food and beverage offerings.

Please consider the location and height of seats before you purchase tickets.  All chairs are the same style and very comfortable with padded seat and backrest - just different heights.

But keep in mind, this is an intimate show in an intimate setting with just over 300 seats to choose from – choose quickly, but wisely!

Attending by yourself?
Don’t give it a second thought…. you’ll make friends and have a great time.

Attending as a twosome?
Consider choosing either side-by-side seating or choose a seat with a shared bar for face-to-face seating across from one another.

Attending with three, four, or more friends?
Purchase your tickets with seating in mind, either side-by-side in the same row or divide the group so you all sit face-to-face lounge-style in our seats with a shared bar. You can always assign “who sits where” once you get to the show. And just in case, remember that the orchestra, mezzanine, and on-stage seats swivel.

Requests for ADA Seating or Guests with Special Needs:
Entrance to the Club is accessible by wheelchair lift, and there are a variety of seating options for guests with specific needs. Please note there is no elevator to mezzanine seats.  Access to the mezzanine is thirteen steps, and there are four steps to access on-stage seating.  Tiara level seating is upstairs or a level up by elevator.

Look for the wheelchair icon on the seating map for easy wheelchair options for you and a companion. You may stay in your chair or transfer to ours.

Please note, Dear San Francisco contains strobe lights and theatrical haze.

If you have further questions or concerns, please call or e-mail us in advance so that we can help you make your visit to the Club comfortable and enjoyable.

The Tiara Suite & Lounge:
The Tiara Suite & Lounge is Club Fugazi’s private “skybox” and is available for private party viewing of each performance. Fun fact – the Tiara was created for the Queen of England to watch Beach Blanket Babylon from the privacy of a royal box! The Tiara Suite enjoys a commanding view of each performance and is typically reserved for private parties of up to 25 people, although individual seats may be available for purchase at select performances. The Tiara Suite & Lounge is accessible by elevator and has a restroom and a sitting area that is reserved for the exclusive use of Tiara Suite & Lounge guests.

What is the performance running time and is there an intermission?

Dear San Francisco runs for approximately 90 minutes with no intermission.

When do club doors open before each performance time?

Doors open 45 minutes before each scheduled performance time.

Can I purchase food and drinks at the show?

Curated by three local standouts, our inspiration is drawn from the history and location of the venerable building that houses us. Preview our current menu here. Is there a food or drink minimum?

No, there is not a drink minimum at Club Fugazi. We invite you to enjoy exactly as much as you'd like from our menu.

Can I bring outside food or drinks?

Can I bring my shopping bags or luggage?
